Gov. Doug Burgum and State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler are asking North Dakotans to support a Medora student’s bid to win a Google design contest, which carries a top prize of a $30,000 college scholarship.
Connor Honeyman, a third grader at DeMores Elementary in Medora, was chosen last week as the North Dakota winner of the “Doodles 4 Google” contest. A Google doodle is a design that appears on the internet search giant’s home page, where it is seen by millions of users daily.
Honeyman’s drawing, which depicts a yellow school bus, is being displayed in an online gallery along with winners from the 49 other states and three U.S. territories. His image in the gallery is here: https://doodles.google.com/d4g/vote.html.
“This is an opportunity for North Dakotans to celebrate a young student’s artwork and give him a shot at a generous college scholarship,” Baesler and Burgum said in a joint statement Monday. “In addition, this contest offers a $50,000 technology package to Connor’s school, DeMores Elementary, if he wins the top prize.”
The national winner will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 worth of technology for his or her school or nonprofit organization. The other four finalists will receive $5,000 scholarships.
Voting opened at 11 a.m. Central time on Monday. It closes at 2 a.m. Central time on Saturday, May 19. The five finalist designs will be chosen shortly after the voting period closes. The national winner will be announced during the first week of June.
“North Dakotans band together to support our young people, and this is a way for all of us to do that with just a few clicks,” Baesler and Burgum said. “We have voted for Connor’s design, and we would be grateful if North Dakotans – and everyone else – took the time to join us.”
